michel gondry is in singapore and there has been some sort of debate about his directorial
debut in hollywood, for the new film green hornet. i dont know i'm just sick of everyone
saying, not verbally to me but on social media platforms like twitter and blogs, about how he
is selling out with this new movie. i am quite a big fan of gondry, some my favourites by him
are: be kind rewind, eternal sunshine of course, and bjork's army of me music video
(read: awesome).
no one wants to be normal but who is to say what is normal anyway.
i personally dont think he is selling out per se. i mean the term selling out itself is overrated. if
you buy an apple from a fruit stall you're selling out because you should grow your own,
because almost everyone else buys their apples from fruit stalls too. he is a magical film
genius and i really dont think anyone deserves as much recognition and monetary rewarding
as he does. i think it is a positive step that ~hollywood~ is giving people like michel gondry a
chance to prove to everyone why he is so appreciated in the indie film scene and why he
manage to have such a strong and loyal cult following. it is Because of green hornet that
michel gondry is in singapore in the first place, so it brought you one step closer to your
favourite director, why are you still complaining? if the green hornet movie is successful,
which it should be because the comic is awesome (or so i've heard), then it will prove that
michel gondry can be an appeal to the commercial world. staying true to your roots AND
being marketable is the ultimate dream for lots of artists, so i say, good for him. i mean if you
found a nice flavour of ice cream wont you be happy if others like it too so that you can share
it with them and share the happiness and the demand and supply curve would by nice and
curvy so the price will decrease! more ice cream for everybody!!!
i appreciate most of the films michel gondry has produced, and if this is the step he wants to
head in his career it is his choice, and as fans we should be okay with it because he is not
dumb and blinded by the hollywood lights, if he can make us love a movie about a girl and guy
riding a paper mache pony in cotton wool clouds, i would not doubt his career decisions and
his commitment to spakle motion.
k, i have to go to school now.
